His scientific interests and research writing, in addition to focusing on international law, international institutions, the law of treaties, the law of the sea, and maritime delimitation, extend to: the international law and negotiation parameters of Greek-Turkish Relations and the Cyprus Issue; the principle of self-determination, secession, and recognition of states; the management of national and international security under international law and politics; the use of military force in international relations and the role of the UN Security Council; human rights; methods of peaceful (political and legal) dispute resolution and conflict settlement; international and ethnic conflicts; the theory and technique of international political negotiations; the institutional aspects of the organization of Greek foreign policy and diplomacy; as well as the policy-oriented analysis of international law (legal realism – New Haven School).

Professional Experience & Diplomatic Actions

  • Former Legal Officer (on individual applications) at the European Commission of Human Rights of the Council of Europe (now merged into the unified European Court of Human Rights), Strasbourg, France (1993–1995).
  • Special Advisor (1996–2004) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on human rights, international security, Greek-Turkish relations, and the institutional organization of the diplomatic service, as well as a scientific officer at the Center for Analysis and Planning.
  • Member (Rapporteur and Secretary) of the Scientific Council of the MFA (2002–2008).
